CONDITIONAL
SENTENCES
If you
work hard , you will succeed.
Or
You will
succeed if you work hard.
There are four types of Conditional Sentences
Types 0 = Zero Conditional
Type 1 = Open Condition ( Real Conditional )
Type 2 = Imaginary Conditional ( Unreal Conditional )
Type 3 = Unfilled Conditional
Types
0 = Zero Conditional
Structure –
Conditional Clause – Simple Present
Main Clause – Simple Present
Zero Conditional always represent Scientific fact , Mathematics Fact, Habitual Action , General Truth
Example-
If you heat water to 100 C , it begins to boil.
If you add 4 and 4 , you get 8.
If you heat Iron , it expands.
Babies cry if they are hungry.
If I say ‘yes’, he says ‘no’
The teacher scold him if he makes a mistake.
Type
1 = Open Condition ( Real Conditional )
Structure –
Conditional Clause – Simple Present Tense
Main Clause – Simple Future Tense ( May ,Can, Must Should )
Examples-
If you study , you will get good marks.
If I get some free time , I will watch this movies.
If I go to delhi , I will see the Red Fort.
If you don’t work, you can’t earn money .
Unless you work , you can’t earn money
They will not help you Unless you apologise.
They will not help you if you don’t apologise.
If you try hard , you may succed.
If you do it , you may win.
If may give you another chance if you impress him.
You must work hard if you want to earn money .
I will help you provided you tell me the truth
Type
2 = Imaginary Conditional ( Unreal Conditional )
Structure –
Conditional Clause – Simple Past Tense
Main Clause – Subject + Would / Could + Verb 1
Examples-
1. If i were a rich man , I would by this car .
2. If I were you , I would not do it .
3. If I were in your place, I would not do it .
4. If he were here , he would not allow us to do it .
5. If I had enough money , I could buy this diamond ring.
6. If I knew the right answer , I could win this Prize.
7. Were I you , I would not apologise .
Or
If I were you , I would not apologise
Type
3 = Unfilled Conditional
Structure –
Conditional Clause – Past Perfect Tense
Main Clause – Subject + Would / Could + have + Verb 3
Examples –
1. If you had studied , you would have passed.
2. If you had invited me , I would have come to your wedding .
3. We would have bought some more books if you had given us more money .
4. If she had learnt English , She would have go t a job .
5. If we had informed them , they would have come to help us .
Or
Had We Informed them they would have come to help us .
6. If you had worked honestly , you would have got a reward .
Or
Had you worked honestly , you would have got a reward
